Questions and Topics for Your Blog Posting:
1. Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above.
The Mystical North- I chose this video because I am particularly interested in the works of Picasso and Goya. I find Spanish art intriguing and I wanted to explore the topic more.
Dada and Surrealism- I chose this video because I have learned some about Surrealism and the Dada art movement, and the whole thing is very interesting to me from a cultural perspective. The protest -like nature of the Dada movement is interesting because I feel like a lot of our culture stems from that movement last century.
2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
The Mystical North- This video showed how the 20th century changed the worldview of many people in Spain. The works of Picasso, Dali, and Goya were really fun to learn about and a lot of the pieces covered in this video were mesmerizing.
Dada and Surrealism- For this video, I learned a lot about how life circumstances effect public worldviews and thus culture and art as a whole. The dada movement and surrealism movement aimed to protest the horrific nature of the 20th century and make art that didn't make logical sense. I enjoyed learning about George Grosz and Salvador DalĂ.
3. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
The Mystical North- This video went along well with the chapters on Spanish art and culture from the textbook. Learning about Picasso and Goya is always an interesting venture, and this video provided good info and enternainment in that area.
Dada and Surrealism- The Dada video was super interesting. Some of the material covered, like the background to the movement and the general cultural feelings of those involved in the movement post WW1, is stuff I've already learned, but this video went much more in depth into specific artists trying to make work that is irrational and more subconscious. It was very interesting.
4. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?
I think both films did a great job of portraying the 20th century through two different but similar lenses. The shift in culture due to world wars had a tremendous effect on how people living viewed their lives and it showed in their work. Both video's increased my knowledge on this century.
