Mod 10: Mask Making - 4/14/19:

1. Upload the three (3) inspiration images to your Blog (or link to your Photobucket account). Explain why you selected the inspiration pieces.
The three masks (below) are all from the Carribean. Last month on Spring break, I saw a lot of these kinds of masks while in Puerto Rico (the third image is of a Puerto Rican mask) and I thought they were fascinating, so I decided to research more on masks from the Carribean. I think they all look extraordinary and interesting.
2. Include the analysis and description (art criticism steps) of the three (3) inspiration pieces. This first mask is from the Yare people of North Venezuela. This mask stook out to me because of the colors used and the contrast between light and dark colors. It looks truly terrifying, which is why I chose this one. The shape/form of the mouth and eyes are interesting to me in particular. The lines are fairly loose and the shapes overall are somewhat rounded. The figure is smiling, but in a very demonic way which adds to the frightening nature.

This mask, similar to the first one, is also very colorful and devilish-looking. It uses contrast between light and dark colors to make certain features pop. This one is called Diablico Sucio, and it is from Mexico. The black mouth contrasted with the large, crooked white teeth makes it look frightening. Like the first mask, the mouth is very big and your eyes tend to focus on it. It also has large eyes, which have a pretty blue color but also blood-red running through them which also adds to the terrifying nature. The color for the majority of the face is a red-orange color which itself is a striking and offputting color.

This third mask is the famous vejigante mask which exist all over the place in San Juan, Puerto Rico. These masks have a very interesting and unique shape as there are 6-8 horn-like appendages sticking out of them. These are also dark with contrasting bright colors, especially around the mouth and eyes which make it look scary. The sharpness of the teeth stick out to me as well. With these masks, the eyes have bright colors around them, but they eyeballs themselves are just black spots, unlike the previous two masks above. All together, the vejigante mask is truly terrifying and fascinating at the same time.

3. Upload images of your sketchs and finished piece.

4. Explain how you used the Elements and Principles in your finished mask.
I used similar lines/shapes for the face, horns, mouth and eyes to construct the mask. I also used the contrast of light and dark color as well. I used the distortion of facial features to make the mask look more scary.
5. Share your opinion of your finished mask and what you thought about creating the mask.
I thought it was a fine little project to do. To be honest, I enjoyed learning about the masks more than I did creating my own, but it was still fun.
