Module 6 video review
1. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
Through the Eyes of the Sculptor-
I learned about the process of creating a sculpture out of, say, marble, where the sculptor creates what he wants to create in clay so that he can mess around with it and then uses plaster and then marble to create the finished product. It makes sense that one would do it this way, but I have never really thought about it before now. I enjoyed seeing how detailed the silicone impressions of the sculptures were. It was also interesting to see all of the people to traveled to northern Italy to sculpt there. The stone that they were sculpting from was as important as the sculpture itself in many cases.
The amount of effort needed in order to create these sculpures is astounding. It's amazing that people would go through the trouble of quarrying the amount of stone they need in order to create sculptures.
Glass and Ceramics-
This video was also interesting to watch. I have seen glassmaking done in person in Corning, NY, so some of this was familiar to me but it was still an interesting watch. I think that the whole process of creating glass/ceramics is aesthetically pleasing and fun to watch. The video definitely made me want to do it myself. The creation of the ceramics was an interesting process. It is interesting the wide variety of ceramics depending on the quality of the clay/raw materials used and the temperature it is heated at.
2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
I feel like the videos supplement the text very nicely. The textbook gives a clear method to sculpting (modeling, casting, carving and assembling, as well as good descriptions of types of materials used for creating (such as clay, glass, metal, wood, etc), and there are a few nice pictures in the textbook, but the video's really showed us more of what it is like to actually work with some of these materials and it allowed us to see artists who really love working with these materials actually work with them.
3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the topics: Sculpture, Installation, and Craft?
I really enjoyed these films. I like how they are organized/structured and they all have interesting info and cool things to look at. They give a real-world sense of what it is like to work with stone and glass and ceramics, etc.. This is something that is more interesting than just reading about in a book.
