Module 5: Art Gallery Visit #1
A.) Which artworks make an impact or impression on me? Why?
Pablo Picasso's Nude Figure, late spring 1910, made an impression on me. I have not seen too many Picasso paintings in real life, so this was a treat. I love the black, white, and beige color palate, and the shapes used to create the person's body is very unique. The other painting that I feel made an impression on me was Jean Metzinger's Danseuse au cafe , 1912. This painting has a lot going on in it. There is a lot of contrasting colors and shapes that give it a very unique look and feel. Your eyes are directed towards the black and white diamond pattern as well as the blue color that pops out at you. I really enjoyed staring at this painting for a good while.
B.) Which artworks do I feel a connection with? Why?
The Mark Rothko "Orange and Yellow" was the painting that I connected with the most. This painting is abstract and emotional while being so simple. At first glance, it doesn't seem like something that would capture so much emotion, but being as big as it is, standing in front of it for a while was something that I really enjoyed. Antoni Taples' Relief over Black Space was another painting that I really felt a connection with, because of the darkness of the piece contrasted with the light parts at the bottom. It feels very dark and powerful when looking at it.
C.) Which artworks would I like to know more about? Why?
I would like to know more about Yves Tanguy's Divisibilite indefinite painting. This one has such unique shapes and an interesting point of view to it. The shadow projected from the main figures in the painting give it an interesting look. It is truly bizarre and I would like to know more about the artists' process for creating it. Also, I would like to know more about Jackson Pollock's Convergence painting. I know of Jackson Pollock, but have not yet had the chance to study him in any detail. This painting of his is super large and complicated. There is a lot going on in the painting, and I would like to understand better what drove him to create such a piece.
It seems like you enjoy looking at art and trying to understand the meaning behind each piece, I respect that. Most people just look at a piece for a few seconds then move on, but it really takes a long time to connect to a piece.
ReplyDeleteAll of these pictures are amazing. Funny thing: I was looking at all of them when I last visited the gallery
